Ph.D. thesis Cotutorship

Description

Under the terms of Article 35 of Regulation UCA/CG06/2012, of 27 June 2012, which regulates the organization of doctoral studies at the University of Cadiz, a Ph.D. thesis is understood as one in which there is a joint direction between a thesis director belonging to the University of Cadiz and another belonging to a foreign university, the training and research periods are carried out in both institutions, and the ultimate objective is to obtain a doctoral degree from the two participating universities, under the terms of the agreement that supports doctoral training and the reading of the thesis.

Beyond the aspects referred to in the strict sense of the co-direction of the thesis, the cotutelage of a thesis is a modality of development of the Ph.D. thesis in which, through an agreement reached by their maximum representatives, two universities from different countries express their willingness to collaborate for the joint training of their doctoral students. This will be reflected in a specific agreement for the development of each thesis developed under the cotutelage system. To this end, and in accordance with the aforementioned rule, the cotutelage of a thesis may only be established, in each case, with a single foreign university, and will be based on a specific agreement, signed for this purpose by the highest authorities of the participating universities, by virtue of which each institution recognizes the validity of the Ph.D. thesis defended within this legal and conventional framework and undertakes to issue the doctoral degree.

The thesis cotutorship completes, with internationalization criteria, the training of the doctoral student, contributing to facilitate access and to make him/her participate in international research projects, as well as the academic contact with foreign teams. From the perspective of the University of Cadiz and its research staff, in addition, the thesis in cotutelage provide opportunities for the consolidation of relations between research teams and with foreign universities, promoting collaboration between the doctoral programs of our university and those of the former, as well as the exchange of doctoral students, researchers, collaboration on projects and experiences in research, mobility and joint international projects.
